Google Ads AI Max Auto-Upgrade in Malta: What Changes in September 2026
The Google Ads AI Max auto-upgrade started this month, and most advertisers in Malta will not get a choice about it. Beginning September 2026, Google is automatically converting Search campaigns that rely on automatically created assets (ACA) and the campaign-level broad match setting over to AI Max. Google expects every eligible campaign to be upgraded by the end of the month.
If you run Search campaigns for a Maltese business, this is not a feature you can quietly ignore until January. The upgrade changes how your ads are matched to queries, how your headlines are written, and in some cases which landing page a searcher lands on. Getting ahead of it is the difference between a smooth transition and three weeks of unexplained cost-per-lead inflation. Our Google Ads management in Malta team has been migrating accounts manually since the voluntary window opened, and the pattern is consistent: accounts that migrate deliberately hold their numbers, accounts that get migrated automatically do not.
What is actually changing in September 2026
Google announced in April 2026 that AI Max for Search campaigns was moving out of beta, and that three legacy features would be folded into it: Dynamic Search Ads, automatically created assets, and the campaign-level broad match setting. In June 2026, Google revised that plan after advertiser pushback.
The current position is worth stating precisely, because a lot of secondhand commentary online still has it wrong:
- Automatically created assets (ACA) and campaign-level broad match campaigns begin auto-upgrading to AI Max in September 2026. That is happening now.
- Dynamic Search Ads (DSA) sunset and auto-upgrade has been pushed back to February 2027. You have more time, but not unlimited time.
- New DSA campaign creation is being switched off across the Google Ads UI, Google Ads Editor and the API. If DSA is a load-bearing part of your account structure, you need a plan before Q1 2027.
There is no opt-out button. The only way to avoid an automatic conversion on a given campaign is to turn off the legacy feature that triggers it, or to migrate the campaign yourself first.
What AI Max actually does differently
AI Max bundles three capabilities that used to be separate settings:
- Search term matching — expands beyond your keyword list using real-time intent signals rather than only landing page content.
- Text customization — rewrites and generates headlines and descriptions based on the query and your site content.
- Final URL expansion — sends traffic to the most relevant page on your site rather than the one you specified.
Google reports that campaigns using the full feature suite see an average of 7% more conversions or conversion value at a similar CPA or ROAS compared to using search term matching alone. That is a real number, but it is a global average across a very wide mix of advertisers, and it comes from Google's own internal data for non-Retail advertisers. It is not a promise about your account.
How the auto-upgrade will configure your campaigns
Google has committed to mirroring your legacy setup rather than resetting it, which is genuinely helpful. The mapping depends on which legacy feature you were using:
If you use automatically created assets
Your campaigns upgrade to AI Max with search term matching and text customization enabled by default. Final URL expansion is not switched on automatically. This is the mildest of the three transitions, but text customization at scale is where most brand-voice problems appear.
If you use the campaign-level broad match setting
Your campaigns upgrade with search term matching enabled only. In practice this is close to what broad match was already doing, but the query expansion logic is different, and your search terms report will look noticeably different within a fortnight.
If you use Dynamic Search Ads
You have until February 2027. When it happens, dynamic ad groups convert to standard ad groups, all three AI Max features switch on, and your existing URL controls (page feeds, exclusions, targeting rules) are preserved. Google has released upgrade tools to port historical settings and data across so you keep performance continuity — these are worth using during the voluntary window rather than inheriting whatever the automatic process decides.
Why this matters more in Malta than in larger markets
Malta is a small-volume, high-variance search market, and that changes the risk profile of an automated query-expansion feature considerably.
A UK advertiser running the same campaign might see 40,000 impressions a week. AI Max has enough signal to learn quickly, and a batch of irrelevant queries gets averaged out. A Maltese advertiser in a niche vertical — commercial cleaning, HVAC installation, corporate services, private clinics — might see 400. At that volume, a fortnight of loose query matching is not a rounding error. It is your entire month's budget.
Three specific Malta issues to plan around:
1. Geographic query bleed
Final URL expansion and broader search term matching increase the chance of picking up searches from Sicily, mainland Italy, and the UK where the intent looks similar but the searcher will never buy from you. Malta's proximity to Italian-language search volume makes this a real cost. Tighten location targeting to presence-based targeting — people in or regularly in your targeted locations — before the upgrade lands, not after. Location settings are one of the enhanced controls AI Max exposes, and they do the heavy lifting here.
2. Bilingual query behaviour
Maltese searchers switch between English and Maltese mid-session, and often use English search terms with Maltese place names. AI Max's text customization will generate headlines based on those queries. If your site content is English-only, you can end up with ads that read awkwardly against a mixed-language query. Text guidelines and brand controls are the lever here — use them to constrain what the AI is allowed to write.
3. Thin conversion data
This is the big one. AI Max optimises against the signals it can see. A Maltese SME running 15 conversions a month with a broken or shallow conversion setup gives the system almost nothing to work with, and the automation will confidently spend budget in the wrong direction. Auditing your conversion tracking is the highest-return hour you can spend before the upgrade. If your lead generation setup counts form views rather than qualified enquiries, fix that first — everything downstream depends on it.
Your pre-upgrade checklist
Work through this before Google does it for you. It takes about ninety minutes on a mid-sized account.
- Audit conversion tracking. Confirm every conversion action is firing, deduplicated, and assigned a realistic value. Remove secondary actions that are polluting the primary optimisation signal.
- Check your primary vs secondary conversion split. AI Max bids toward primary actions. If everything is marked primary, nothing is.
- Set brand controls. Decide explicitly which brands your ads may and may not appear against. Competitor and reseller terms are the usual culprits.
- Tighten location controls to presence-based targeting, and add exclusions for markets you cannot service.
- Write text guidelines. Give the AI hard constraints on tone, claims, and terminology — especially if you operate in a regulated Maltese vertical like financial services, gaming, or healthcare.
- Baseline your numbers. Export the last 90 days of CPA, ROAS, impression share and search term data. Without a baseline you cannot tell whether a post-upgrade change is AI Max or seasonality.
- Set a two-week review. Diarise a search terms review for 14 days after the upgrade lands, and add negatives aggressively in the first month.
If you would rather not do this yourself, a structured paid media audit will cover the same ground and usually surfaces two or three tracking problems the account owner did not know about.
Should you migrate voluntarily or wait?
For ACA and broad match campaigns, the question is already moot — it is happening this month. For DSA campaigns, you have a genuine decision, and the honest answer is that it depends on how much you trust your current setup.
Migrate now if: your conversion tracking is clean, you have enough volume to read results inside a month, and you want to control the configuration rather than inherit defaults. You also get the benefit of Google's one-click experiments to measure the performance impact against a holdout.
Wait if: you are mid-way through a peak trading season, your tracking needs work first, or you have a single campaign carrying the majority of revenue and no appetite for variance. February 2027 is far enough out to fix the foundations first.
What you should not do is take no decision at all. The default outcome is an automatic migration with settings chosen by Google, at a time chosen by Google. That is a fine outcome for a large, well-instrumented account and a poor one for a small Maltese advertiser with three conversions a week.
The bigger picture for Maltese advertisers
The AI Max upgrade is one instance of a broader pattern: Google and Meta are both removing granular manual controls and replacing them with system-level inputs — conversion data quality, creative volume, brand and text constraints. The advertisers who do well in 2027 will not be the ones with the cleverest keyword lists. They will be the ones feeding the best signals in.
For most Maltese businesses that means three things: fix your measurement so the algorithms optimise toward revenue rather than proxies, produce enough creative and copy variation for the systems to have something to test, and treat channel strategy as a portfolio decision rather than a set of independent accounts. That thinking sits closer to growth strategy than to campaign management, and it is where the returns are moving.
Frequently asked questions
Can I opt out of the Google Ads AI Max auto-upgrade?
No. Google has not provided an opt-out for the AI Max upgrade. The only way to prevent a specific automatic conversion is to turn off the legacy feature that triggers it — for example, disabling automatically created assets or the campaign-level broad match setting before the upgrade reaches your account. Campaigns using those features will otherwise be converted during September 2026.
When exactly are Dynamic Search Ads going away?
Google originally planned to sunset DSA in September 2026 but extended the timeline after advertiser feedback. The DSA sunset and auto-upgrade now begins in February 2027. You will also lose the ability to create new DSA campaigns in the Google Ads UI, Google Ads Editor and the API as that transition rolls out, so any new build should be planned on AI Max.
Will AI Max increase my cost per lead in Malta?
It can in the short term, particularly in low-volume accounts where broader query matching takes longer to settle. Google's global data shows an average 7% lift in conversions or conversion value at a similar CPA when all AI Max features are used, but averages hide wide variance. The practical answer is to baseline your last 90 days before the upgrade, review search terms fortnightly for the first two months, and add negatives aggressively. Most Maltese accounts we manage stabilise within three to four weeks.
What are AI Max brand controls and do I need them?
Brand controls let you specify which brands your ads may and may not appear against, which is the main guardrail against AI Max expanding into competitor or irrelevant branded queries. If you are in a market with strong competitor search volume, or you resell products with well-known brand names, you should configure them before the upgrade rather than after. They are one of the enhanced controls AI Max adds over legacy DSA.
Does AI Max change how my Google Ads budget should be allocated?
Not immediately, but it changes what your budget buys. AI Max broadens the query set a campaign can reach, so a budget that was fully consuming a narrow keyword pool may now spread across a wider, less-qualified set. Watch impression share and search term relevance in the first month. If quality drops while volume rises, the answer is usually tighter brand and location controls rather than a budget cut. Reviewing allocation across Search, Meta and other channels together — rather than campaign by campaign — gives a clearer picture of where the incremental euro is best spent.
